Day One

Murtadha...Today we visited a local village known as Kampong Sri Wangi.

We learnt about the rubber tapping process. We managed to see how latex is collected from a rubber tree.

This white liquid from the rubber tree is called Latex.

After listening to the process, I have gained a better understanding of  how rubber materials are made.

The next activity after our lunch was a Kuih Bahulu demonstration. Basically, there are four simple ingredients needed to make Kuih Bahulu. (Simple)

We saw a unique egg-beater and we were intrigued by the traditional way they made the Kuih Bahulu. It was cooked over charcoal. Interesting!

I loved the part when we were given an opportunity to make the Kuih Bahulu.
It was piping hot and delicious

Aiman...We continued our visit to the coffee plantation to learn and see how the local coffee plants were grown and cultivated.

We saw the coffee plant and some of us tried eating the edible seeds. It was sweet.

The guide shared with us interesting facts about the history of coffee in Malacca. We managed to learn about the differences between white and black coffee.

The interesting part of the visit was definitely indulging in a cup of coffee in the midst of a 'kampong' atmosphere.

Ieyad...Today,we visited the pineapple plantation.

We were taught how to plant a pineapple crown.

The pineapples were planted using a simple strategy.

The pineapples flourished due to the excellent condition of the soil.

Peat soil was very soft.

We also witnessed a demonstration on how they scraped the pineapple leaf  to collect its fiber to make shirts.

The fiber is used to make clothing and this lead to sustainable luxury textiles and fashion.

We had a pineapple tasting session..it was delicious and sweet!

Jeevan's reflection... The similarity between Singapore and Malacca is firstly, they both share a common history as a port of call for traders.Singapore has transformed itself  into a modern city, whilst Malacca has maintained its identity as a heritage city. People in both cities believe in working together as a community and they believe in self-reliance and self-sufficiency. We appreciate the work of our pioneers as  it is through their hard work that we have a modern Singapore.
